Rieko, a mother, lost her husband in an accident and has been living with her son, Yugo. Working hard with only one woman, Yugo has grown up to be a student who can aim for a top university. From now on, all the hard work will be rewarded, and once Yugo becomes a member of society, a happy life awaits him...that was supposed to be the case. In the summer before Yugo's graduation next year, the Hiraoka family consults with his homeroom teacher, Shiraishi, about his career path. After a successful three-way meeting, Rieko is left alone in the classroom and is told that there is a problem with Yugo's admission to higher education.
